Area of Science:

  • Mycology
  • Pulmonology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Pulmonary fungal infections are uncommon in immunocompetent individuals.
  • Lung abscesses typically result from bacterial or tuberculous infections.
  • Paecilomyces lilacinus is a fungus rarely associated with human disease.

Observation:

  • A 57-year-old man presented with an abnormal chest shadow on radiography.
  • A coin lesion was identified in the right hilum.
  • Surgical resection revealed a fungal abscess.

Findings:

  • The fungal abscess was caused by Paecilomyces lilacinus.
  • This represents the first reported case of lung abscess due to P. lilacinus in an immunocompetent host.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the fungal etiology.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case expands the spectrum of known pulmonary mycoses.
  • It suggests that Paecilomyces lilacinus should be considered in the differential diagnosis of lung abscesses, even in healthy individuals.
  • Further research may be warranted to understand the pathogenesis and epidemiology of P. lilacinus lung infections.
