The elderly type II diabetic: a treatment challenge
1Battle Creek Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mich., USA.
Abstract:
Type II or noninsulin dependent diabetes mellitus is the predominant type of diabetes in the elderly. Complexities of diabetes management with elderly patients are discussed, including differences in presenting signs and symptoms of the disease, treatment complications that occur with concomitant illnesses or age-related physiological changes, and drug interactions that can lead to either hypo- or hyperglycemia. The goals of treatment are discussed. Standard therapies, including diet, exercise, and medications, are reviewed with the special considerations of the geriatric patient in mind.
