I am a 54-year-old man. My father is a healthy 84-year-old, but my two brothers (59 and 61 years old) have been diagnosed with prostate cancer within the past year. I am worried not only about myself but about my two sons. Is there any hope of a vaccine for prostate cancer?H B Simon

On call. Last week I received a mailing from a Canadian company that did not support American drugs like Hytrin and Proscar in dealing with enlarged prostates. There were about 30 testimonials in favor of its product. The company says that zinc is an essential ingredient to shrink the prostate. It further states the need for pyridoxine and certain amino acids, Serenoa, repens (saw palmetto), serrulata, Panax extract, and hydrangea extract. Comments from various European magazines are also citedH B Simon

On call. I am 58 years old. I've always been healthy, but my doctor found that my cholesterol was 279. He prescribed Mevacor, and my cholesterol came down to 210. Do I still need to be on a low-fat diet?H B Simon

I appreciate all the good advice you give us about how to pass less urine at night. I've cut out coffee and alcohol, and I don't even have water with dinner. It has helped a lot, but it seems that you should also be advising us to cut down on salt to reduce night-time urine. Wouldn't a low-salt diet also help?H B Simon

On call. I am a 69-year-old man who had a radical prostatectomy three years ago. I feel fine and my PSA is undetectable. I've heard that a special scan can detect prostate cancer, but my hospital doesn't seem to know about it. Should I try to arrange one?H B Simon

On call. My wife and I are both 62 and healthy. She started taking Prempro during her menopause eight years ago but has now decided to stop the hormones. I began taking DHEA five years ago, but I switched to AndroGel when my doctor gave me a prescription last year. Should I stay on AndroGel, go back to DHEA, or stop hormones?Harvey B Simon

On call. I've been struggling with my weight for most of my 56 years. Despite a careful diet, I've crossed the line from overweight to obese. I know from reading Harvard Men's Health Watch that I should slim down--but I also read how hard it is and that most diets fail. If it's so hard to reduce, why do you bother writing about obesity? I'd rather read about something else!Harvey B Simon

On call. My wife's nutrition newsletter says that everyone over 60 should take a multivitamin with 25 micrograms of vitamin B12. We're both 60 and healthy, but the vitamin I've been taking since I read your February 2000 article on supplements has only 2.4 micrograms of B12. Am I missing out? Why are these recommendations so different?Harvey B Simon

My husband subscribes to Harvard Men's Health Watch, but I read it even more than he does. I hope you can help us resolve a disagreement. He wants to have pizza two to three times a week for his prostate, but I don't think it's a healthy food. Who is right?Harvey B Simon
