On call. When I turned 50 about eight months ago, I had a complete checkup. Everything was fine (I even had a colonoscopy) except for two things: my blood pressure was 148/92 and my HDL was 32. After reading your newsletter, I decided exercise would be the best way to help both problems. I built up to 3 miles of walking almost every day, and I'm starting to mix in some jogging. But my blood pressure is still 140/92 and my HDL is only 34. Why haven't I improved?Harvey B Simon

On call. My brother takes Chinese herbs to boost his energy, and he swears by them. He gave me some tablets, but I haven't taken them yet. I know his enthusiasm may be psychological, but I'd like to try them anyway if you say they are safeHarvey B Simon

On call. I am a 71-year-old diabetic , and I've had trouble with my erections for seven or eight years. At first the problem was mild, but it's been getting worse. My doctor gave me a prescription for Viagra, but it didn't help. I tried two pills at once without any luck, but I did get a mild headache. Can I use three pills?Harvey B Simon

On call. I am a 71-year-old man with diabetes and high blood pressure. I take Glucophage for my diabetes and Zestril for my blood pressure, and my doctor says both problems are under good control, but I've developed a very annoying problem. Every time I eat, I develop terrible sweating on my face and neck. It only lasts 10-15 minutes, but my shirt collar gets soaked and I'm too embarrassed to go out to dinner. Am I allergic to something in food? Am I getting hot flashes as my wife did when she had the change of life?Harvey B Simon

On call: I am a 71-year-old man with diabetes and high blood pressure. Ever since I can remember, I've been bothered by painful canker sores two or three times a year. My doctor says they aren't caused by my medication and I think he's right, since the cankers started before I developed diabetes. What causes the sores, and what can I do about them?Harvey B Simon

On call. Peyronie's disease. I have an embarrassing problem. Over the past year or so, my erections seem to have become crooked. My sex life is fine, but I want to know if it's a serious problem and if I should see a doctorHarvey B Simon

On call. I have always had my blood tests taken the first thing in the morning, before I've had breakfast. We've just moved to a new home and I'll have a long commute to the hospital, so I'd like to eat before I start out. My cholesterol has always been great, so my doctor said a light breakfast won't interfere with cholesterol tests. But he didn't know if eating would change my PSA result. What do you think?Harvey B Simon

On call. When I awaken in the morning, I have terrible bad breath. My breath seems okay during the rest of the day, but I worry about developing halitosis. What causes bad breath?Harvey B Simon
