On call. I found your November 2002 article on maximum heart rate very interesting. But since I take Tenormin for high blood pressure, the new formula doesn't seem to apply to me. How can I figure out my maximum rate? I'm 48 years old, and I don't take any other drugs or have any other problems

On call. I am 66 years old and have had angina for nearly 5 years. I take aspirin and Zocor, but I haven't needed nitroglycerin for at least 3 years, even though I ride my bike quite hard at least 4 days a week. I've started having trouble with my erections, and now I want to try Viagra. My doctor gave me a prescription, but my wife won't let me fill it. Is Viagra safe for me?

On call. I was recently diagnosed with gout. I'm feeling well with medication, but my doctor want me to take drugs for my cholesterol and blood pressure because gout will raise my risk of heart attack. I don't want to take more pills. What do you think?

On call. Whenever I ride my bike for more than an hour or so, I notice numbness in my penis. I know that can lead to impotence, so I've stopped taking long rides. But now I see some policemen in my town patrolling on bikes all day long. Will they end up with problems?

On call. I have been taking selenium in the hope that it would prevent me from getting prostate cancer. But I heard on the radio that the National Cancer Institute is advising men to stop taking selenium. Should I stop it?

On call. My wife gets down in the dumps each January. She thinks it's just because of the holidays have come and gone, but I think it's more than that. Is it depression?

On call. I hope you can help me with a very annoying problem. My mouth and throat are constantly parched, even though I carry a water bottle and sip from it constantly. I know it's a small problem compared to all the things you write about, but it's very uncomfortable, and I'd appreciate any advice you can offer
