I have aortic regurgitation (leaking of the aortic valve), and my physician says it is time to think about surgery. I feel pretty well - I can ski, play tennis. What do I have to lose by putting the surgery off?

Ask the doctor. Just two years ago, my total cholesterol was 175 mg/dL, and my LDL cholesterol was 128 mg/dL. This week my doctor told me that my cholesterol was 240 and my LDL was 170. I haven't gained any weight or changed my diet--what's going on?

By the way, doctor... I recently had a hacking cough, and my doctor told me that I had bronchitis. He told me I didn't need antibiotics. is this some managed-care attempt to save money at my expense?

By the way, doctor... A local hospital is advertising that I can get a CT scan of my entire body for $700. If it's negative, they say that shows that I don't have cancer. My insurance company won't cover this, but it seems like it might be worth the money if one of these scans can find something. Do you think it's a good idea?

By the way, doctor... I'm 78 and have a long history of heart valve trouble - a leaky aortic valve, to be exact. But now it looks like my creaky left hip needs to be replaced. My husband is worried that my heart won't be able to take the operation. My doctors think I should be okay. Who's right?

Ask the doctor. I am 68 years old and had a heart attack last year. I think I am doing fine and passed my last exercise test with flying colors. But about a month ago I had a fainting spell, which occurred when I went to the bathroom after a big meal. In addition, I frequently feel lightheaded for a few seconds when I stand up. I think that problem has been there for years. Do you think these spells are related to my heart?
