Ask the doctor. A year ago, my doctor recommended that I have a pacemaker because my pulse rate was too slow (38 on a monitor, 48 taken by hand). I did, and the rate of the pacemaker was set at 60. I am 90 years old, and my entire life my heart rate has been fortyish. Is my future affected by my pacemaker's timing?T H Lee

I am a 60 year-old woman and have a question about my cholesterol levels. My total cholesterol level is normal (just over 200) but my HDL is low, only 28. Should I be taking a cholesterol-lowering medicine?T H Lee

My insurance company won't pay for my prescription for Viagra without a letter from my doctor saying that I have been evaluated. As far as I know, I am the only one who can tell whether I have impotence. What does the insurance company want?T H Lee

Ask the doctor. I have diabetes and use insulin two, sometimes three, times a day to keep my sugar under control. My hope is that this will help me avoid a heart attack. Is this a reasonable goal?T H Lee

Ask the doctor. I am 78 years old and have diabetes and a heart murmur from narrowing of my aortic valve. My doctor tells me that the narrowing is not so severe that I need surgery, but warns me that I may need an operation some day. Naturally, I would like to avoid that possibility. Is there anything I can do to reduce the risk?T H Lee

By the way, doctor... I'm 68, and I've been taking Viagra for about a year now. The drug is working for me, but I'm always a little scared that I am going to give myself a heart attack. Should I be?T H Lee

Ask the doctor. I am generally healthy, but I had a heart attack last year. At my age, 78 years old, I find it hard to take it seriously when my doctor and my children tell me that I should be lowering my cholesterol and exercising. It seems to me that the idea of trying to prevent "premature" death is silly in someone my age. It's not like I feel ready to die, but it's hard for me to believe that prevention works in someone who has already gone beyond his "three score ten" yearsT H Lee
