On call. I've read that olive oil is good for health, but is extra virgin olive oil worth the extra cost, or is it just trendy gimmick?

On call. My last two blood tests showed that my cholesterol is too high. My doctor wants me to take a statin drug, but I'd rather use a natural remedy. I saw an ad for red yeast rice that says it's as effective as the statins, and I can get it without a prescription-- but should I?

On call. My wife and I are both 62 and healthy. She started taking Prempro during her menopause eight years ago but has now decided to stop the hormones. I began taking DHEA five years ago, but I switched to AndroGel when my doctor gave me a prescription last year. Should I stay on AndroGel, go back to DHEA, or stop hormones?

On call. I've been struggling with my weight for most of my 56 years. Despite a careful diet, I've crossed the line from overweight to obese. I know from reading Harvard Men's Health Watch that I should slim down--but I also read how hard it is and that most diets fail. If it's so hard to reduce, why do you bother writing about obesity? I'd rather read about something else!

On call. My wife's nutrition newsletter says that everyone over 60 should take a multivitamin with 25 micrograms of vitamin B12. We're both 60 and healthy, but the vitamin I've been taking since I read your February 2000 article on supplements has only 2.4 micrograms of B12. Am I missing out? Why are these recommendations so different?

My husband subscribes to Harvard Men's Health Watch, but I read it even more than he does. I hope you can help us resolve a disagreement. He wants to have pizza two to three times a week for his prostate, but I don't think it's a healthy food. Who is right?

On call. September 11 was an emotional day for all of us, but September 12 was a confusing day for me. I read two newspapers that reported on research in the New England Journal of Medicine. The New York Times headline said: "Prostate cancer surgery found to cut death risk," but the Washington Post announced: "Studies find no advantage to prostate cancer surgery." Which was right?

On call. When my wife was in the hospital with a kidney infection four years ago, her doctor came in to see her every day, but when I caught pneumonia this year, my doctor turned me over to a hospital doctor until I got home. I did get good care, but I missed seeing my regular M.D. What do you think of this way of doing things?

On call. I seem to build up a lot of ear wax, much more than my wife. Is there any reason for the difference? What should I do about the wax?

On call. I'm a 63-year-old man with arthritis but no other conditions. My only medicines were Naprosyn and vitamins until my last annual checkup, when my cholesterol was high. My doctor gave me Zocor, which helped. But I developed muscle aches, so he switched me to Zetia. I feel fine again, but I'd like to know what you think
