Harvard Heart Letter : From Harvard Medical School|September 4, 2010
Ask the doctor. After I had and abnormal electrocardiogram,my doctor wants me to have a nuclear stress test to check my arteries for any blockages. (I also have a left side bundle block.) What noninvasive test would give as much information (or almost as much) as a nuclear stress test? I have had many scans, for this and that, so I would like to limit my exposure to radiation if possibleRichard Lee

Ask the doctor. Every article you write on preventing heart disease or stroke mentions the importance of exercise. But I can't exercise due to severe lower back problems. I religiously take medications for my high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and low thyroid. There must be other people like me who can't exercise but really want to prevent heart trouble. Can you give us any suggestions?Richard Lee

Ask the doctor. After being diagnosed with high blood pressure several years ago, I started taking diltiazem and Atacand. The results were good, giving me an average blood pressure of 110/65. I recently developed gastroenteritis and aspiration pneumonia. While I was in the hospital, my blood pressure got so low I was told to stop taking these medications. I have been off them since, and my blood pressure has remained normal, averaging 105/65. How can this be? Will high blood pressure return?Richard Lee

Ask the doctor. A few years ago, I switched from regular soda to diet soda--and lost 12 pounds. My husband tells me diet soda is bad for me, but isn't it better than the sugary stuff?Richard Lee

Harvard Heart Letter : From Harvard Medical School|February 3, 2006
Ask the doctor. When I go to bed at night, I feel a pulsing in my head above my left ear. I never feel this when I am sitting or standing. I have high blood pressure and have had three bypasses. Is this something I should be worried about?Richard Lee
Harvard Heart Letter : From Harvard Medical School|February 26, 2008
Ask the doctor. Over the past few years, I have needed to take hydrochlorothiazide and Lasix together. After I was hospitalized for a serious electrolyte imbalance, my doctors told me never to take these medications again. I recently had my aortic valve replaced, and am now retaining some water. Are there any diuretics I can safely take for this?Richard Lee

I have a deep muscle massage every month or so. After my sister had a stroke, I started worrying that my massages could loosen any plaque in my carotid arteries, which could make me have a stroke. Could this happen?Richard Lee
