Ask the doctors. I have a heart murmur that my doctor says is caused by a leaky mitral valve. I feel perfectly fine, am an active gardener, and enjoy playing with my grandchildren. My last echocardiogram showed that my heart is getting bigger, and my doctor says it is time to operate on the valve. Isn't this suggestion a bit drastic?

Ask the doctors. I have always had a snoring problem and recently underwent a sleep test at the insistence of my wife. I was diagnosed as having sleep apnea. We have read about the connection between sleep apnea and heart disease, and now we are both concerned. Will treating my sleep apnea reduce my heart risk?

Ask the doctors. I recently had a drug-eluting stent placed in one of my coronary arteries after an episode of severe chest pain. My doctor told me I had to take Plavix every day. Now I feel perfectly fine-except for my right hip. I need a hip replacement, but my orthopedist wants to wait until I'm off Plavix before operating. How long is long enough to be on this drug?

Ask the doctors. I am 71 years old, have chronic kidney failure, and am on dialysis. I know my overall outlook is not good, and I wonder whether it is worth it to take a statin to control my cholesterol

Ask the doctor. I need surgery for a gastrointestinal problem, and my question is how to handle my antiplatelet therapy, which I have been taking for two years since I had angioplasty. I take aspirin and clopidogrel, which were started after I had a heart attack and a stent was placed to keep the narrowed artery open. Things have been going just fine. But I know the surgeon wants to stop the clopidogrel during the period around the surgery, and that worries me

Ask the doctors. My doctor suggested I consider getting a left ventricular assist device [LVAD], and I am overwhelmed at the idea. I have severe heart failure and get short of breath with virtually every activity--sometimes just sitting in a chair. But the idea of having a device inside me forever scares me. Should I do it?

Ask the doctors. I am 58 years old and in pretty good health, but at 120 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), my blood glucose test was a little high on my last routine physical. My physician told me not to worry about it, but I am wondering if I should get screened for diabetes with some other test
