By the way, doctor...I've heard that statins can cause cancer, at least in animal experiments. Is there any chance that my statin might prevent another heart attack in the short run, but give me cancer in the long run?T H Lee
Harvard Heart Letter : From Harvard Medical School|June 19, 2001
Ask the Doctor. I know that there have been a lot of studies showing that beta blockers help patients with congestive heart failure live longer. I have heart failure, and last year my doctor prescribed a beta blocker. In a few days, I became so short of breath that he had me stop taking it. I am upset that I can't use this important therapy. Is there any way I might be able to do so?T H Lee

Ask the Doctor: I was very upset to read about the high rates of abnormal brain function that follow cardiac surgery. I've had two angioplasties, and my doctors say that I may need to have bypass surgery in the future. If I undergo this operation, is there anything I can do to reduce my chances of having a stroke or a memory problem afterward?T H Lee

By the way, doctor...I've been trying to lose weight on my own for years. I'm interested in trying something over the Internet, partly because it seems more private than other weight-loss programs. Any chance an Internet program could work?T H Lee
Harvard Heart Letter : From Harvard Medical School|September 8, 2001
Ask the Doctor. A cardiologist suggested I have a test called a cardiokymograph to look at the motion of my heart, but my insurance company won't cover it. Is this a valuable test? If so, why won't the insurance company pay for it?T H Lee

By the way, doctor... After I get a cold, I get a dry cough that lasts for months. Eventually It goes away, but not before I drive myself and everyone around me crazy. Any suggestions?T H Lee
Harvard Heart Letter : From Harvard Medical School|July 6, 2000
Ask the doctor: I have a leaky aortic valve and my left ventricle is slowly enlarging. I have started taking coenzyme Q10, which is supposed to help my heart beat stronger. I know that you have not been enthusiastic about this supplement in the past, but has any new information come in?T H Lee
Harvard Heart Letter : From Harvard Medical School|October 31, 2001
Ask the doctor. I've been taking estrogen since I reached menopause seven years ago, and it really helped my hot flashes and other symptoms. When I started these drugs, I was told they would lower my risk for osteoporosis and heart attacks, but I ve been reading lots of negative articles about how they may increase risk for heart problems. Should I stop them?T H Lee
Harvard Health Letter|November 29, 2001
By the way, doctor... My father died of a heart attack at age 72, but he smoked and ate poorly. Now that I'm in my 50s, I'm starting to wonder if I fall into a high-risk category for heart diseaseT H Lee
