By the way, doctor... I work in a store and frequently lift boxes that are pretty heavy. One of my friends wears one of those thick leather back belts and swears that the extra support helps her back. My doctor doesn't have any opinion on whether these belts are a good idea. Do you?

By the way, doctor... My problem is the opposite of everyone else I know - I have been losing, not gaining, weight. I am a 56-year-old man, and a year ago I weighed 166. Today, I'm down to 152. I feel pretty good, and my appetite is fine, but I am concerned. I did start to smoke again last year

Ask the doctor. I am 83 years old and have coronary artery disease that causes angina everyday with activities like climbing stairs. My doctor thinks I am going to need bypass surgery to get some freedom from my symptoms. Isn't it too risky at my age?

Ask the doctor: I have very high cholesterol that isn't in the target range, even with high doses of statins. I hate to take any more pills. Any advice?

By the way, doctor...I am 72 years old and generally healthy, but I have an annoying problem: at the end of the day, my voice gets weak and hoarse. I wonder if it's related to my heartburn, which wakes me up occasionally with an acid taste in my throat and mouth. I drink a lot of coffee, and I used to be a heavy smoker but gave that up 15 years ago

Ask the Doctor. I take a beta blocker called atenolol and an ACE inhibitor every morning for my hypertension. When I get up in the morning, my blood pressure is high, but falls as the day goes on. It seems like it s always pretty good by the time I see my doctor, so she thinks everything is fine. Still, the high numbers worry me. Should I be on another drug?

By the way, doctor...I'm a woman, age 52 and generally healthy. But sometimes my urine has blood in it. After doing some tests, my doctor has pretty much ruled out a urinary tract infection, which makes sense to me because I haven't had any burning sensation. They've done an ultrasound but haven't found anything. I have an appointment to see a urologist, who is going to look inside my bladder. Should I be worried about cancer or something serious like that?

My doctor says that I have calcium deposits around my aortic valve and these deposits are causing a heart murmur. Is there any treatment that can halt their progress or reverse this calcification?
