I take Adalat (or nifedipine, also sold as Procardia) and captopril tablets daily for my high blood pressure. My physician told me not to take aspirin because of the possibility of drug interactions. From what I have read about aspirin, I hate to miss out on the benefitsT H Lee

Ask the Doctor. My older brother recently had a heart attack and bypass surgery at the age of 53! I am physically active and don t have any risk factors for heart disease. But neither did my brother, who also had normal cholesterol and blood pressure numbers. I ve been wondering if I should be taking a cholesterol-lowering medication, even though my cholesterol is normalT H Lee

By the way, doctor. I went through menopause about 10 years ago and have been taking estrogen therapy ever since. My uterus was removed because of fibroids, so there is no risk of endometrial cancer, which is why I am taking estrogen without progesterone. Should I have a bone density scan? A lot of my friends are having them, but I'm not sure how this test could alter my therapyT H Lee
Harvard Heart Letter : From Harvard Medical School|March 11, 2000
Ask the doctor. I had an EKG done a few weeks ago, and the reading came back "probable inferior myocardial infarction of indeterminate age." I am, to the best of my knowledge, perfectly healthy at the age of 72. Now my doctor wants to do a bunch of tests on me. Should I go along?T H Lee
Harvard Health Letter|October 4, 2000
By the way, doctor... In the last five years or so, I've occasionally had an intense pain on my left side. The doctors tell me that I have diverticulitis and should think about surgery. I hate the idea. Is it necessary?T H Lee
Harvard Health Letter|October 4, 2000
By the way, doctor... I'm a 62-year-old woman, and for years I've had an aching chest pain that comes on at unpredictable times and sometimes lasts for hours. My doctor said my stress test results were normal. But I've read that heart disease is harder to diagnose in women than in men. Should I get more tests?T H Lee
Harvard Health Letter|August 6, 2000
By the way, doctor... My blood pressure is high in my doctor's office, but low when I take it at home on my blood-pressure monitor. My doctor says that I have white-coat hypertension, blood pressure that goes up in a doctor's office. She says it isn't medically dangerous, but can that be true?T H Lee
