[Cytological characteristics of Hodgkin disease with nodular sclerosis]
Insights
This study analyzed lymph node biopsies from Hodgkin's disease patients with nodular sclerosis. Findings reveal a combination of tumor cells and reactive lymphoid tissue, crucial for understanding this lymphoma subtype.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Pathology
- Cell Biology
Context:
- Retrospective analysis of 57 patients with cytologically verified Hodgkin's disease (lymphogranulomatosis).
- Focus on tumor characteristics in nodular sclerosis subtype using puncture biopsy specimens.
- Involved lymph nodes were examined histologically.
Purpose:
- To investigate the cellular composition of tumors in Hodgkin's disease with nodular sclerosis.
- To identify and characterize the types of cells present in affected lymph nodes.
- To understand the interplay between neoplastic cells and reactive lymphoid components.
Summary:
- Histological examination of lymph node biopsies revealed "lacunar" cells in 80.7% of cases.
- Berezovskii-Sternberg cells (mononuclear, "mirror", multinuclear) and "reticular" cells were frequently observed.
- The lymphoid component consisted primarily of lymphocytes and prolymphocytes.
Impact:
- Characterizes the cellular milieu of Hodgkin's disease with nodular sclerosis.
- Highlights the dual nature of the tumor as a combination of neoplastic growth and reactive hyperplasia.
- Provides insights into the pathobiology of Hodgkin's lymphoma for potential diagnostic and therapeutic advancements.
Abstract:
Cellular characteristics of tumor with nodular sclerosis verified histologically were retrospectively studied on puncture biopsy specimens of involved lymph nodes from 57 patients with cytologically verified Hodgkin's disease (lymphogranulomatosis). "Lacunar" cells in different combinations with three types (mononuclear, "mirror", and multinuclear) of Berezovskii-Sternberg cells and "reticular" cells were detected in 80.7% cases. The lymphoid component was presented by lymphocytes and prolymphocytes. Cell composition of the tumor in Hodgkin's disease with nodular sclerosis should be regarded as combination of tumor growth with reactive hyperplasia of the lymphoid tissue at the level of lymphocytes and prolymphocytes.

Lymphoid Cells and Tissues
Lymphoid cells consist of various types of immune system cells. These include B and T lymphocytes, which are responsible for producing antibodies and killing infected cells, respectively. Dendritic cells act as messengers between the innate and adaptive...
Secondary Lymphoid Organs
The spleen is a vital organ in the lymphatic system, nestled in the upper left side of the abdomen. It is composed of two primary regions: the red pulp and the white pulp, each having distinct functions. The red pulp performs a significant role in blood filtration. It efficiently purges the blood of old or damaged red blood cells and...
Detailed Structure and Function of Lymph Nodes
From a histological perspective, lymph nodes can be split into two main areas: the superficial cortex and the deep medulla. The outer cortex is populated by dendritic cells, macrophages, and B lymphocytes, which are densely packed into follicles. When these B-lymphocytes are presented...
