ImmunoCyt a useful method in the follow-up protocol for patients with urinary bladder carcinoma
1Department of Clinical Pathology, Borås Central Hospital, Sweden.
Insights
The ImmunoCyt test, a novel urine analysis, demonstrates 100% sensitivity for detecting bladder cancer. This test offers high accuracy and is easily implemented in standard laboratories.
Area of Science:
- Urothelial Carcinoma Detection
- Diagnostic Test Evaluation
- Oncological Biomarkers
Background:
- Bladder cancer diagnosis relies on invasive procedures like cystoscopy.
- Existing urine cytology methods have limitations in sensitivity.
- There is a need for accurate, non-invasive bladder cancer detection methods.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the diagnostic performance of the ImmunoCyt test.
- To evaluate ImmunoCyt as a urine-based assay for malignant transitional cells.
- To compare ImmunoCyt with standard bladder cancer diagnostic protocols.
Main Methods:
- The ImmunoCyt test was performed on voided urine samples prior to cystoscopy.
- A cohort of 121 patients suspected of bladder cancer were investigated.
- Test results were compared against cystoscopy, urine cytology, and histological examination.
Main Results:
- The ImmunoCyt test achieved 100% sensitivity in detecting histologically confirmed bladder cancer (31/31 cases).
- Specificity was determined to be 68.7% (83/114 negative cases were ImmunoCyt positive).
- Seven specimens were excluded from the analysis.
Conclusions:
- The ImmunoCyt test is a highly sensitive diagnostic tool for bladder cancer.
- The test demonstrates acceptable specificity and is easily applicable in laboratory settings.
- ImmunoCyt shows potential as a valuable non-invasive adjunct for bladder cancer diagnosis.
Objective:
To evaluate the ImmunoCyt test--a urine-bound test for the detection of malignant transitional cells.
Patients And Methods:
ImmunoCyt was compared with the standard investigation at our hospital for bladder cancer--cystoscopy, cytological examination of bladder wash material and, if necessary, a histological examination. A voided urine sample was collected before cystoscopy. We investigated 121 patients; seven specimens could not be evaluated.
Results:
Thirty-one of the 114 patients had a histologically proven urinary bladder carcinoma. All 31 cases were positive in the ImmunoCyt test. Twenty-six of the 83 negative cases were ImmunoCyt positive. The sensitivity was 100% and the specificity was 68.7%.
Conclusion:
ImmunoCyt is easily applicable in a small laboratory and has high sensitivity and acceptable specificity.
