[Open lung biopsy in diagnosis of interstitial lung disease]
Insights
Open lung biopsy is a valuable diagnostic tool for interstitial lung diseases (ILDs). It provides accurate pathological diagnoses, especially for rare or atypical ILD cases, improving patient management.
Area of Science:
- Pulmonology
- Pathology
- Diagnostic Imaging
Context:
- Interstitial lung disease (ILD) diagnosis remains challenging.
- Non-invasive methods may not provide definitive diagnoses for all ILD cases.
- Open lung biopsy (OLB) is an invasive procedure with potential diagnostic value.
Purpose:
- To evaluate the diagnostic utility and role of open lung biopsy in patients with interstitial lung disease.
- To assess the sensitivity and specificity of OLB in identifying various ILD subtypes.
Summary:
- A retrospective review of 24 patients with ILD who underwent OLB was conducted.
- OLB yielded specific diagnoses including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, and lung cancer.
- Clinical evaluations alone were insufficient for definitive diagnosis in most patients.
Impact:
- Open lung biopsy is a sensitive and specific method for diagnosing interstitial lung diseases.
- OLB aids in determining the extent and location of ILD.
- This procedure is crucial for diagnosing rare and atypical interstitial lung disease presentations.
Objective:
To evaluate the role of open lung biopsy in diagnosis of interstitial lung disease.
Methods:
24 patients with interstitial lung disease who underwent open lung biopsy from 1993 to June 1998 were reviewed.
Results:
The documented pathologic diagnosis in 24 patients with interstitial lung disease who underwent open lung biopsies were: 7 IPF (UIP), 1 acute interstitial pneumonia (AIP), 3 BOOP, 2 DPB, 3 sarcoidosis, 2 tuberculosis, 1 histiocytosis-X and 1 lung cancer. Most of these patients did not definitely diagnosed through their clinical evaluation including history, chest X-ray, pulmonary function tests and TBLB.
Conclusions:
Open lung biopsy, is a useful method, as it is sensitive and specific in diagnosis of interstitial lung disease. It is helpful in defining the site and extent of interstitial lung disease and diagnosing rare and atypical interstitial lung disease.
