Insights
Gallium-67 scans effectively detect infections and tumors. This case highlights its use in identifying rare, widespread skin plasmacytomas in recurrent multiple myeloma.
Area of Science:
- Nuclear medicine
- Oncology
- Dermatology
Background:
- Gallium-67 scintigraphy is a valuable diagnostic imaging technique.
- It is utilized for detecting infectious foci and malignant neoplasms.
- Multiple myeloma is a recognized clinical indication for gallium-67 tumor surveys.
Observation:
- A rare case of multiple myeloma recurrence is presented.
- The recurrence manifested as diffuse multiple cutaneous plasmacytomas.
- Whole-body gallium-67 scanning was employed for imaging.
Findings:
- The gallium-67 scan successfully visualized the extent of the cutaneous plasmacytomas.
- This imaging modality proved effective in demonstrating the rare presentation of recurrent multiple myeloma.
Implications:
- This case underscores the utility of gallium-67 scanning in identifying unusual presentations of multiple myeloma.
- It highlights the role of nuclear imaging in the management of recurrent plasma cell neoplasms.
- Gallium-67 scintigraphy can aid in staging and treatment planning for complex myeloma cases.
Abstract:
Gallium-67 scanning is a useful tool to search for infectious foci and malignant tumors. Multiple myeloma is one clinical indication for gallium-67 tumor survey. Here, we report a rare case of diffuse multiple cutaneous plasmacytomas from recurrent multiple myeloma, demonstrated by whole-body gallium-67 scan.
