Insights

This study assessed immunoglobulin A (IgA) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) expression in non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) using immunohistochemistry. The findings provide insight into the prevalence of IgA and IgM in B-cell lymphomas.

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is a heterogeneous group of B-cell malignancies.
  • Immunoglobulin (Ig) expression on lymphoma cells is a key diagnostic and prognostic factor.
  • Understanding IgA and IgM expression in NHL can aid in subclassification and targeted therapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the expression rates of IgA and IgM in B-cell lymphoma.
  • To correlate IgA and IgM expression with CD20 positivity in NHL specimens.
  • To contribute data on the immunophenotypic characteristics of NHL.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemical staining was performed on 52 paraffin-embedded NHL specimens.
  • Specimens were initially assessed for CD20 expression.
  • CD20-positive cases were further evaluated for IgA and IgM expression.

Main Results:

  • 36 out of 52 cases (69.2%) were CD20-positive.
  • Among CD20-positive cases, 15 (41.7%) expressed IgM, 9 (25%) expressed IgA, and 4 (11.1%) expressed both IgA and IgM.
  • The mean age of CD20-positive patients was 50.0 +/- 23.6 years, with a male predominance (61%).

Conclusions:

  • IgM and IgA expression is present in a significant proportion of CD20-positive B-cell lymphomas.
  • These findings align with existing literature on immunoglobulin expression in NHL.
  • Further research may explore the clinical implications of specific IgA/IgM expression patterns in NHL.
