Los modelos del virus de inmunodeficiencia humana simio (VIH) revelan cómo las proteínas de la envoltura influyen en la patogénesis del VIH-1. El uso de co-receptores (CCR5 vs. CXCR4) dicta patrones distintos de pérdida de células T CD4 + en macacos, lo que afecta el desarrollo de vacunas.
