Objetivo del estudio:

  • Investigar los factores que rigen la modulación contextual en la percepción visual.
  • Para determinar si la diferencia de orientación o la estructura espacial del contexto afecta principalmente las respuestas neuronales y conductuales.
  • Desafiar las teorías existentes que postulan las interacciones sintonizadas por la orientación como la principal causa de la interferencia contextual.

Principales métodos:

  • Utilizó una nueva ilusión psicofísica, "brillo transparente", como una sonda sensible.
  • Se varió sistemáticamente la estructura espacial de los elementos contextuales.
  • El rendimiento psicofísico medido y la modulación de la respuesta neural inferida.

Principales resultados:

  • Demostró que la diferencia de orientación entre el objetivo y el contexto no dicta el rendimiento.
  • Se demostró que la modulación contextual depende de la estructura espacial general del contexto.
  • Identificó que la supresión contextual disminuye cuando los elementos contextuales forman un objeto coherente e independiente.

Conclusiones:

  • La modulación contextual en la percepción visual está impulsada por la organización espacial del contexto, no solo por la similitud de orientación.
  • La ilusión del "brillo transparente" revela que la agrupación de elementos contextuales en un objeto coherente puede abolir la supresión.
  • Los hallazgos sugieren una comprensión revisada de cómo el cerebro procesa la información contextual para percibir objetos.
