Sus antecedentes:

  • La investigación de la demencia es crucial en los países en desarrollo, pero las variaciones regionales presentan desafíos metodológicos.
  • Comprender estas variaciones requiere herramientas de diagnóstico imparciales desde el punto de vista cultural y educativo.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Desarrollar y validar un instrumento de diagnóstico de demencia adecuado para diversos orígenes culturales y educativos.
  • Abordar la necesidad de una evaluación confiable de la demencia en la investigación de salud global.

Principales métodos:

  • Un estudio multicéntrico que involucró a 2885 participantes de más de 60 años en 25 sitios en Asia, América Latina y África.
  • Utilizó el estado mental geriátrico, el instrumento de detección de demencia en la comunidad y la tarea de aprendizaje de listas de diez palabras del CERAD.
  • Desarrolló y validó un algoritmo predictivo utilizando estas medidas.

Principales resultados:

  • Cada medida individual predijo de forma independiente el diagnóstico de demencia.
  • El algoritmo derivado demostró un rendimiento superior en comparación con las medidas individuales.
  • El algoritmo identificó el 94% de los casos de demencia con bajas tasas de falsos positivos en diferentes grupos.

Conclusiones:

  • El algoritmo desarrollado proporciona una base sólida para el diagnóstico de demencia culturalmente y educativamente sensible.
  • Esta herramienta apoya tanto la investigación clínica como la demencia basada en la población a nivel mundial.
  • La disponibilidad de medidas traducidas facilita la adopción generalizada en las regiones en desarrollo.
