Resumen

Las fluctuaciones significativas en el peso corporal, tanto la pérdida como la ganancia, están relacionadas con un mayor riesgo de mortalidad. El mantenimiento de un peso estable se asocia con las tasas de mortalidad por todas las causas y enfermedades coronarias más bajas.

  • Los datos de mortalidad (todas las causas, enfermedad coronaria, cáncer) se obtuvieron de los certificados de defunción.
  • Principales resultados:

    • La mortalidad por todas las causas más baja se observó en individuos con peso estable (+/- 1 kg).
    • Los aumentos significativos en la mortalidad por todas las causas y la enfermedad coronaria se asociaron tanto con una pérdida de peso sustancial (> 5 kg) como con un aumento de peso (> 5 kg).
    • El cambio de peso no predijo la mortalidad por cáncer, y los hallazgos fueron independientes del tabaquismo, la actividad física y el índice de masa corporal.

    Conclusiones:

    • Tanto la pérdida como la ganancia de peso corporal, tanto intencional como no intencional, se asocian con un aumento de la mortalidad por todas las causas y la enfermedad coronaria.
    • Los ciclos de peso pueden ser un factor que contribuye al aumento del riesgo de mortalidad.
    • Mantener un peso corporal estable parece ser óptimo para la longevidad.
