La ADN polimerasa humana eta (Pol eta) copia con precisión el ADN, pero elude los dímeros de timina con baja fidelidad, lo que aumenta el riesgo de cáncer de piel. Esta síntesis de ADN propensa a errores, especialmente en pacientes con xeroderma pigmentosum, contribuye a la mutagénesis.
