Sus antecedentes:

  • El virus de Epstein-Barr (EBV) es un presunto contribuyente a la patogénesis de la esclerosis múltiple (EM).
  • Existe una investigación limitada sobre las asociaciones virales en la EM pediátrica.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Investigar la seropositividad para el EBV y otros virus comunes en niños con EM en comparación con controles sanos.
  • Explorar los posibles factores virológicos en la EM pediátrica.

Principales métodos:

  • Un estudio de caso-control en el que participaron 30 pacientes pediátricos con EM y 143 controles (90 de urgencias, 53 sanos).
  • Se analizaron muestras de suero para detectar anticuerpos IgG contra el EBV, el citomegalovirus, el parvovirus B19, el virus del herpes simple y la varicela zóster.
  • Los controles emparejados se basaron en el año de nacimiento.

Principales resultados:

  • El 83% de los pacientes pediátricos con EM tenían evidencia serológica de infección remota por EBV frente al 42% de los controles (P<.001).
  • Los pacientes pediátricos con EM tenían menos probabilidades de haber estado expuestos al virus del herpes simple (P=.003).
  • No hay diferencia significativa en la seropositividad para el citomegalovirus, el parvovirus B19 o la varicela zoster.

Conclusiones:

  • Los hallazgos sugieren una asociación significativa entre la infección por el virus de Epstein-Barr y la EM pediátrica.
  • El EBV puede desempeñar un papel en el desarrollo de la EM en niños.
