Las muertes infantiles inesperadas repetidas son típicamente naturales, no antinaturales. Este estudio encontró una proporción de 6,7 muertes naturales a no naturales entre los bebés en el programa Cuidado del Próximo Bebé.

Objetivo del estudio:

Principales métodos:
- Se estudió una cohorte de 6373 bebés inscritos en el programa CONI en diciembre de 1999.
- Las investigaciones detalladas incluyeron entrevistas familiares, revisiones de autopsias y discusiones de casos de muertes CONI.
- Se analizaron datos de Inglaterra, Gales e Irlanda del Norte.
Principales resultados:
- 57 (8,9 por 1000) niños CONI murieron; 48 fueron muertes inesperadas.
- De las 46 primeras muertes de CONI, 40 fueron naturales y seis fueron probables homicidios.
- 18 familias experimentaron dos muertes por síndrome de muerte súbita infantil; dos tuvieron probables homicidios dobles.
Conclusiones:
- Las muertes infantiles inesperadas repetidas son predominantemente naturales.
- El estudio proporciona evidencia estadística para contrarrestar la suposición de causas antinaturales en las muertes infantiles recurrentes.
