Sus antecedentes:

  • La obesidad por ingesta excesiva de calorías eleva el riesgo de enfermedades crónicas y reduce la esperanza de vida.
  • La restricción calórica (CR) con nutrientes adecuados en roedores extiende la esperanza de vida y reduce el riesgo de enfermedad.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Evaluar las implicaciones fisiológicas y clínicas de la restricción calórica con una ingesta adecuada de nutrientes.

Principales métodos:

  • Búsqueda exhaustiva de la literatura de PubMed, revistas de gerontología y listas de referencia.
  • La inclusión de los ensayos epidemiológicos, de casos y controles, y los ensayos controlados aleatorios.
  • Evaluación de la calidad de los informes revisados basados en la revisión por pares, el tamaño de la muestra, la objetividad y la minimización de sesgos.

Principales resultados:

  • La CR en humanos adultos induce adaptaciones metabólicas, hormonales e inflamatorias similares a las de los roedores y monos con CR.
  • Estas adaptaciones incluyen factores de riesgo reducidos para la diabetes, enfermedades cardiovasculares y potencialmente cáncer.
  • La restricción calórica excesiva conduce a la desnutrición y a resultados clínicos adversos.

Conclusiones:

  • La restricción calórica en adultos promueve cambios metabólicos, hormonales y funcionales beneficiosos.
  • La ingesta óptima de calorías y grasa corporal para la salud humana y la longevidad aún no se ha determinado.
  • El CR moderado puede plantear riesgos para poblaciones específicas, como individuos magros.
