    Sus antecedentes:

    • Las tecnologías de conversión de carbón están surgiendo en los EE.UU., con riesgos potenciales para la salud y el medio ambiente.
    • Las tecnologías energéticas existentes también presentan peligros distintos.
    • Se necesita una comparación exhaustiva para comprender estos impactos.

    Objetivo del estudio:

    • Comparar los efectos sobre la salud y el medio ambiente de cuatro tecnologías de conversión de carbón y cuatro tecnologías energéticas existentes.
    • Para cuantificar los riesgos de salud y seguridad en el trabajo a través de ciclos de combustible.
    • Para evaluar los impactos en la salud pública de la contaminación del aire y el transporte de combustible.

    Principales métodos:

    • Utilizó el modelo de simulador de red del sistema energético de Brookhaven (BESNS) para las estimaciones de emisiones.
    • Se analizaron ciclos completos de combustible desde la extracción hasta el uso final.
    • Incluye estimaciones cuantitativas de daños laborales y de salud pública.

    Principales resultados:

    • Tecnologías clasificadas por aumentar la ineficiencia energética, los residuos ambientales y los daños a la salud: combustión directa (gas natural / petróleo) < combustibles sintéticos (combustión directa) < gas sintético (eléctrico) < carbón (eléctrico) < combustibles líquidos sintéticos (eléctricos).
    • Riesgos laborales específicos identificados en la extracción, el transporte, el procesamiento y la conversión.
    • Se discutieron los impactos cualitativos en la salud de la materia orgánica policíclica y el azufre reducido.

    Conclusiones:

    • Las tecnologías de conversión de carbón presentan un espectro de desafíos ambientales y de salud.
    • La eficiencia energética y el impacto ambiental generalmente aumentan con la complejidad de la conversión de combustible.
    • El cumplimiento de la legislación ambiental, como la Ley de Aire Limpio, es una consideración crítica.
