Sus antecedentes:

  • El papel de los medios de comunicación en la promoción de la salud pública es ampliamente reconocido, pero rara vez se cuantifica.
  • Medir el impacto de los medios de comunicación en los resultados de salud en entornos de bajos ingresos sigue siendo un desafío.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Medir rigurosamente el número de vidas salvadas por las intervenciones de los medios de comunicación en un país de bajos ingresos.
  • Evaluar la rentabilidad de las campañas mediáticas a gran escala para la salud pública.

Principales métodos:

  • Un diseño de ensayo aleatorizado por clúster se emplea en Burkina Faso (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01517230).
  • La herramienta Lives Saved se utiliza para predecir el impacto de las campañas de medios basadas en la saturación.

Principales resultados:

  • Se predice que las campañas mediáticas basadas en la saturación reducirán la mortalidad infantil en un 10-20%.
  • Se prevé que el costo por año de vida ajustado por discapacidad sea tan bajo como las intervenciones de salud existentes.

Conclusiones:

  • Las intervenciones de los medios de comunicación de masas muestran un potencial significativo para reducir la mortalidad infantil en los países de bajos ingresos.
