Sus antecedentes:

  • Casi la mitad de las madres estadounidenses dejan de amamantar seis meses después del parto.
  • Existen disparidades en las tasas de lactancia materna entre las madres más jóvenes y las más desfavorecidas desde el punto de vista socioeconómico.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Actualizar la recomendación del Grupo de Trabajo de Servicios Preventivos de los Estados Unidos (USPSTF) de 2008 sobre las intervenciones de atención primaria para la promoción de la lactancia materna.
  • Evaluar la eficacia de las intervenciones en el inicio, la duración y la exclusividad de la lactancia materna.
  • Revisar el impacto de las intervenciones de lactancia materna en los resultados de la salud infantil y materna.

Principales métodos:

  • Revisión sistemática de las pruebas sobre las intervenciones de apoyo a la lactancia materna.
  • Se incluyeron estudios sobre apoyo profesional, apoyo entre pares y educación formal.
  • Evaluación de la eficacia de la intervención y de los daños potenciales.

Principales resultados:

  • Las intervenciones que incluyen apoyo profesional, apoyo de pares y educación modifican efectivamente el comportamiento de la lactancia materna.
  • Los daños asociados con estas intervenciones son mínimos.
  • Existe una certeza moderada de que las intervenciones de apoyo a la lactancia producen un beneficio neto moderado.

Conclusiones:

  • El USPSTF recomienda la implementación de intervenciones durante el embarazo y el posparto para apoyar la lactancia materna.
  • Estas intervenciones se recomiendan a todas las madres para mejorar la duración de la lactancia y los resultados de salud.
  • Una recomendación "B" significa un alto grado de certeza de que el beneficio neto es moderado o sustancial.
