Objetivo del estudio:

  • Para investigar la edad y el significado del arte rupestre en Borneo.
  • Para determinar si el arte antiguo similar existía en las islas adyacentes.

Principales métodos:

  • La datación por serie de uranio de los depósitos de carbonato de calcio sobre el arte rupestre.
  • Análisis de pinturas figurativas y plantillas de mano en las cuevas kársticas de Kalimantan Oriental.

Principales resultados:

  • Una pintura figurativa de animales en la cueva Lubang Jeriji Saléh data de hace un mínimo de 40.000 años, potencialmente el arte figurativo más antiguo del mundo.
  • Las plantillas de mano del mismo sitio datan de hace 37.200 años, con otra potencialmente tan antigua como hace 51.800 años.
  • El arte rupestre más reciente del Pleistoceno, que incluye plantillas de mano de color púrpura oscuro y una figura humana, data de hace 21,000-13,600 años.

Conclusiones:

  • La pintura rupestre surgió en el este de Borneo hace entre 52.000 y 40.000 años.
  • Un estilo distinto de arte parietal desarrollado durante el Último Máximo Glacial.
  • Una importante provincia de arte rupestre paleolítico existió en el este de Eurasia y Wallacea desde hace al menos 40.000 años hasta el Último Máximo Glacial.
