Sus antecedentes:

  • Las provincias magmáticas intraplacas ofrecen información sobre la composición y la heterogeneidad del manto de la Tierra.
  • Las heterogeneidades del manto a menudo están relacionadas con el reciclaje impulsado por subducción de volátiles y elementos incompatibles.
  • Mientras que algunos volcanes intraplacas aprovechan fuentes profundas del manto, los depósitos más poco profundos también contribuyen a la generación de magma.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Investigar la composición y el origen de un dominio del manto previamente no documentado muestreado por las Bermudas.
  • Para caracterizar la firma isotópica única y el contenido volátil de este reservorio del manto.
  • Explorar las implicaciones para el reciclaje del manto y la formación de dominios isotópicos extremos.

Principales métodos:

  • Mediciones de alta precisión de las relaciones de isótopos (Pb, Sr, Nd, Hf) de las lavas erupcionadas.
  • Análisis geoquímico de los fundidos insaturados de sílice.
  • Modelado geodinámico para comprender el flujo del manto y el muestreo del depósito.

Principales resultados:

  • Las Bermudas muestran un dominio del manto con isótopos radiogénicos extremos de 206Pb/204Pb (19.9-21.7) y bajos de 207Pb/204Pb (15.5-15.6).
  • El depósito está enriquecido con elementos incompatibles y volátiles, con isótopos invariantes de Sr, Nd y Hf, lo que sugiere una edad < 650 millones de años.
  • La evidencia apunta a un depósito transitorio en la zona de transición del manto, posiblemente involucrando minerales como la K-holandita.

Conclusiones:

  • La fuente de las Bermudas representa un nuevo reservorio recientemente reciclado en la zona de transición.
  • Los eventos de subducción durante la formación de Pangea probablemente contribuyeron a la formación del embalse y a la ocurrencia específica del Atlántico.
  • La evidencia geoquímica demuestra el papel del almacenamiento de la zona de transición en la generación de dominios isotópicos extremos, anteriormente atribuidos únicamente al reciclaje profundo.
