Objetivo del estudio:

  • Investigar la relación entre el interés propio material y la honestidad cívica a nivel mundial.
  • Para probar las predicciones sobre la honestidad en un experimento de campo a gran escala.
  • Identificar los factores que influyen en la devolución de los artículos perdidos.

Principales métodos:

  • Se llevaron a cabo experimentos de campo en los que participaron más de 17.000 billeteras "perdidas" en 355 ciudades de 40 países.
  • Varió la cantidad de dinero contenido dentro de las billeteras.
  • Medido la tasa a la que las carteras devueltas fueron contactadas por los destinatarios.

Principales resultados:

  • Se observó una correlación positiva significativa entre la cantidad de dinero en una billetera y la probabilidad de su devolución, en la mayoría de los países.
  • Este hallazgo fue contradictorio tanto para los laicos como para los economistas.
  • El aumento del incentivo financiero para la deshonestidad amplificó las tasas de rendimiento.

Conclusiones:

  • La honestidad cívica está influenciada por factores más allá del puro interés económico, incluido el altruismo y la autopercepción.
  • El deseo de evitar verse a sí mismo como un ladrón aumenta con la posible ganancia material de la deshonestidad.
  • Los resultados desafían los modelos económicos tradicionales y ponen de relieve las complejas motivaciones humanas.
