Bromination and chlorination of aromatic rings by electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions are easily achieved, but fluorination and iodination are difficult to achieve. The addition of a hydrogen halide to 1,3-butadiene gives a mixture of 1,2- and 1,4-adducts. Since more substituted alkenes are more stable, the 1,4-adduct is expected to be the major product. However, the product distribution is strongly influenced by temperature; low temperature favors the 1,2-adduct, whereas the 1,4-adduct is predominant at high temperature.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Elucidar el mecanismo detrás de la alta orto-regioselectividad en la borilación C-H catalizada por cobalto de arenas fluoradas.
  • Identificar los factores que rigen la selectividad de esta transformación catalítica.

Principales métodos:

  • Análisis de normalización del tiempo variable (VTNA) de la cinética de la reacción.
  • Mediciones del efecto cinético del isótopo de deuterio (KIE).
  • Espectroscopia de RMN in situ y estudios computacionales.

Principales resultados:

  • La reacción se produce a través de un régimen cinético con adición oxidativa rápida y reversible de C ((sp2) -H.
  • Se observa un intermediario de cobalto (I) -arilo con una alta regioselectividad de orto a fluor.
  • La adición oxidativa C ((sp2) -H es el paso que determina la selectividad, influenciado por el efecto orto-fluorino.

Conclusiones:

  • La alta regioselectividad se origina en la interacción entre un régimen cinético atípico y las preferencias termodinámicas.
  • El efecto orto-fluorino estabiliza los enlaces cobalto-carbono adyacentes, dirigiendo la selectividad.
  • La comprensión de este mecanismo puede ayudar a diseñar reacciones de berilación catalítica más selectivas.
