Sus antecedentes:

  • La neuroimagen se utiliza ampliamente en la investigación del cerebro, pero carece de tablas de referencia estandarizadas para las métricas cerebrales individuales a lo largo del tiempo.
  • Los gráficos de crecimiento antropométricos existentes proporcionan puntos de referencia para el desarrollo físico, destacando la necesidad de herramientas similares en la neurociencia.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Crear un recurso interactivo de acceso abierto (brainchart.io) para la evaluación comparativa de la morfología cerebral a partir de datos de resonancia magnética.
  • Establecer normas de referencia para la cuantificación de la estructura cerebral a lo largo de la vida humana.

Principales métodos:

  • Agregado de 123.984 imágenes de resonancia magnética de 101.457 participantes (del feto a los 100 años de edad) en más de 100 estudios.
  • Métricas de resonancia magnética cuantificadas que utilizan puntuaciones centílicas en relación con las trayectorias de la vida útil de los cambios estructurales del cerebro.
  • Se ha evaluado la estabilidad, la resistencia a las variaciones técnicas y la heredabilidad de las puntuaciones centílicas.

Principales resultados:

  • Identificó nuevos hitos del desarrollo neurológico y demostró una alta estabilidad individual en la estructura cerebral a lo largo del tiempo.
  • Los gráficos cerebrales mostraron la robustez de las diferencias metodológicas entre los estudios.
  • Las puntuaciones de Centile revelaron una mayor heredabilidad y proporcionaron una medida estandarizada para la variación neuroanatómica en los trastornos.

Conclusiones:

  • Los gráficos cerebrales ofrecen una herramienta crucial para cuantificar de manera robusta la variación individual en los fenotipos de neuroimagen frente a las trayectorias normativas.
  • Este recurso facilita la comparación estandarizada de la estructura cerebral en el desarrollo y en las poblaciones clínicas.
