El COVID-19 severo implica inflamación pulmonar impulsada por los macrófagos infectados por el SARS-CoV-2. La activación de los inflamasomas causa la muerte celular, limitando la propagación del virus pero aumentando la inflamación; el bloqueo de esta vía revierte el daño pulmonar pero libera el virus infeccioso.
