Sus antecedentes:
- Las plataformas de hielo antárticas regulan el flujo de hielo glacial hacia el océano, lo que influye en el aumento global del nivel del mar.
- Los datos limitados históricamente impidieron el monitoreo a gran escala de la dinámica de la plataforma de hielo y los impactos de desprendimiento.
Objetivo del estudio:
- Generar un registro completo y panantártico de las costas de la plataforma de hielo y evaluar los cambios desde 1997.
- Cuantificar el impacto del adelgazamiento y desprendimiento de la plataforma de hielo en el apuntalamiento y el futuro aumento del nivel del mar.
Principales métodos:
- Integración de datos de satélite ópticos y de radar de varios sensores.
- Generación de líneas costeras antárticas espacialmente continuas y de resolución anual desde 1997 hasta 2021.
- Modelado de los efectos de la evolución de la costa en el apuntalamiento de la plataforma de hielo.
Principales resultados:
- Se produjo una pérdida neta de 36.701 ± 1.465 km2 de superficie de la plataforma de hielo antártica entre 1997 y 2021.
- La pérdida de masa por el retroceso del frente de hielo y el adelgazamiento de la plataforma de hielo fueron aproximadamente iguales, totalizando casi el doble de la cantidad medible solo por altimetría.
- El parto y el adelgazamiento han reducido igualmente el apuntalamiento de la plataforma de hielo desde 2007.
Conclusiones:
- El área de la plataforma de hielo antártica está experimentando una pérdida neta significativa, y los eventos futuros de parto plantean riesgos.
- La pérdida de masa combinada por el adelgazamiento y la retirada casi duplica las estimaciones de la altimetría sola.
