Sus antecedentes:

  • La reducción electroquímica de CO2 (CO2RR) es vital para la energía limpia, pero su mecanismo, particularmente el papel de los iones electrolitos, sigue sin estar claro.
  • La influencia de los cationes de metales alcalinos en el CO2RR en las interfaces es controvertida, y falta un diagrama completo de energía libre.
  • La comprensión de estos factores es crucial para optimizar la eficiencia del CO2RR.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Investigar sistemáticamente el mecanismo de la CO2RR en las interfaces Au-agua.
  • Aclarar el papel específico de los cationes de potasio (K+) en la activación y la selectividad del CO2.
  • Obtener un diagrama completo de energía libre para la CO2RR y la reacción de evolución de hidrógeno (HER) concurrente.

Principales métodos:

  • Simulaciones de dinámica molecular desde el principio (AIMD).
  • Muestreo de crecimiento lento integrado con AIMD (SG-AIMD) para cálculos precisos de energía libre.
  • Modelado computacional de las interfaces electroquímicas

Principales resultados:

  • CO2RR es fácil en la interfaz de la esfera interna con los cationes K+, mostrando una baja barrera de energía libre de 0,66 eV para la activación de CO2.
  • Los cationes K+ interfaciales inhiben el HER competitivo induciendo un efecto de bloqueo cinético, elevando la barrera de paso de Volmer a 1,27 eV.
  • Se obtuvo con éxito un diagrama completo de energía libre que ilustra la termodinámica y la cinética de CO2RR y HER.

Conclusiones:

  • Los cationes de potasio juegan un papel crítico en la mejora del rendimiento de electrorreducción de CO2.
  • Los cationes K+ facilitan la adsorción y activación de CO2 mientras que simultáneamente suprimen la reacción de evolución del hidrógeno.
  • Los hallazgos proporcionan conocimientos mecanicistas cruciales para el diseño de electrocatalizadores eficientes de CO2RR.
