Sus antecedentes:

  • El Niño-Oscilación Sur (ENSO) es uno de los principales impulsores de los impactos climáticos y socioeconómicos extremos a nivel mundial.
  • Los patrones de recuperación económica y los efectos del cambio climático antropogénico en las consecuencias económicas de ENSO siguen siendo en gran medida desconocidos.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Cuantificar el impacto económico de los acontecimientos de ENSO en el crecimiento económico a nivel nacional.
  • Proyectar las pérdidas económicas futuras bajo varios escenarios de cambio climático.
  • Evaluar la sensibilidad de la economía a la variabilidad climática y a la intensificación antropogénica del ENSO.

Principales métodos:

  • Análisis econométrico de los acontecimientos históricos de ENSO y su impacto en las economías nacionales.
  • Modelado económico bajo futuros escenarios de cambio climático y emisiones.
  • Análisis estocástico de las secuencias de eventos ENSO y sus consecuencias económicas.

Principales resultados:

  • Los eventos de El Niño muestran un impacto negativo persistente en el crecimiento económico a nivel nacional.
  • Los eventos de El Niño de 1982-83 y 1997-98 resultaron en pérdidas de ingresos globales estimadas de $ 4.1 billones y $ 5.7 billones, respectivamente.
  • Las pérdidas económicas proyectadas para el siglo XXI debido a la intensificación de ENSO podrían alcanzar los 84 billones de dólares en virtud de las promesas de mitigación actuales, influenciadas por la variabilidad de la secuencia de eventos.

Conclusiones:
