Resumen

Sus antecedentes:

  • La dependencia de densidad negativa conspecífica (CNDD) reduce el rendimiento de las plantas cerca de vecinos de la misma especie.
  • Una hipótesis prevaleciente sugiere que el CNDD es más fuerte en los bosques tropicales, promoviendo la coexistencia y la diversidad de especies.
  • Los estudios previos sobre los gradientes latitudinales del CNDD estaban limitados por datos estáticos.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Evaluar de manera exhaustiva los patrones latitudinales de la DNC utilizando datos dinámicos de mortalidad.
  • Investigar cómo varía el CNDD con la latitud y la abundancia de especies.
  • Comprender las implicaciones de la CNDD para la diversidad de los bosques tropicales.

Principales métodos:

  • Se utilizaron datos dinámicos de mortalidad de 23 sitios forestales a nivel mundial.
  • Estimación de la DNC específica para cada especie y lugar.
  • Comparación de los patrones de CNDD en las latitudes tropicales y templadas.

Principales resultados:

  • La estabilización del CNDD fue generalizada, pero no más fuerte en los trópicos en promedio.
  • Las especies tropicales raras y de abundancia intermedia experimentaron un CNDD más fuerte que las especies comunes.
  • Este patrón CNDD dependiente de la abundancia estaba ausente en los bosques templados.

Conclusiones:

  • El CNDD regula con mayor intensidad la abundancia de especies en los bosques tropicales, especialmente para las especies menos comunes.
  • Aunque no es más fuerte en general, el impacto diferencial del CNDD en los trópicos puede contribuir a una mayor diversidad de árboles locales.
  • Se necesita más investigación para evaluar plenamente el papel del CNDD en los gradientes de diversidad latitudinal.
