Principales métodos:

  • Utilizó una base de datos de gastos que cubre 201 grupos de consumo en 168 países.
  • Se han analizado 6 indicadores de huella ambiental.
  • Cuantificó la contribución del consumo a las transgresiones de los límites planetarios.

Principales resultados:

  • El 10% superior y el 20% de los consumidores representan el 31-67% y el 51-91% de las transgresiones de los límites planetarios, respectivamente.
  • El objetivo del 20% superior para los cambios en el consumo puede reducir la presión ambiental en un 25-53%.
  • Centrarse en los sectores de alimentos y servicios dentro de los grupos de alto gasto puede abordar el cambio del sistema de tierras y los límites de la integridad de la biosfera.

Conclusiones:

  • Los consumidores que gastan mucho contribuyen desproporcionadamente a la degradación del medio ambiente.
  • Los cambios de consumo dirigidos entre los individuos más ricos son cruciales para mitigar las transgresiones de los límites planetarios.
  • La política y las acciones individuales deben dar prioridad a los patrones de consumo de los principales consumidores para una administración ambiental efectiva.
