Objetivo del estudio:

  • Investigar si las respuestas del cerebro a conceptos individuales están compuestas algebraicamente.
  • Explorar los mecanismos de la composicionalidad de los conceptos en las representaciones neuronales.

Principales métodos:

  • Generó "perturbaciones conceptuales" en el espacio neural promediando las respuestas de resonancia magnética funcional a imágenes específicas del concepto.
  • Aplicó estas perturbaciones a los patrones neurales de las imágenes para crear nuevos patrones infundidos con conceptos.
  • Usó un modelo de decodificación de resonancia magnética funcional para interpretar los patrones modificados del cerebro.

Principales resultados:

  • La decodificación de patrones cerebrales modificados produjo imágenes que reflejaban conceptos combinados (por ejemplo, hombre en monopatín + concepto de invierno = hombre en snowboard en invierno).
  • Los procesos de composición en las representaciones neuronales condujeron a resultados perceptivos predecibles.
  • Incluso pequeñas perturbaciones en los patrones neuronales podrían alterar significativamente los conceptos decodificados.

Conclusiones:

  • La codificación combinatoria de los conceptos del cerebro puede seguir un proceso sistemático similar al algebraico ("álgebra cerebral").
  • Este estudio basado en modelos sugiere resultados perceptivos predecibles de la composicionalidad neural.
  • Abre caminos para futuras investigaciones empíricas sobre los mecanismos de composicionalidad del cerebro.
