El estudio aboga por la expansión de los geriatras

Sus antecedentes:
- Las discusiones mundiales sobre la integración de la geriatría comunitaria (CG) en la práctica están en curso.
- La CG sigue siendo marginada en los países de bajos ingresos, lo que dificulta el acceso a la atención médica de los adultos mayores que enfrentan barreras sistémicas.
- Los modelos de capacitación geriátrica a menudo priorizan la atención hospitalaria sobre los enfoques centrados en la comunidad.
Objetivo del estudio:
- Para defender la redefinición del papel de los geriatras más allá de los entornos hospitalarios.
- Hacer hincapié en la importancia crítica de la geriatría comunitaria (CG) en América Latina.
- Proponer la integración de la CG en la formación y la práctica geriátrica.
Principales métodos:
- Un estudio de caso de un programa geriátrico en Colombia.
- Análisis de las barreras sistémicas para el acceso a la atención sanitaria de los adultos mayores en entornos de bajos ingresos.
- Exploración de las funciones de los geriatras más allá del ámbito biomédico.
Principales resultados:
- La educación geriátrica debe abordar la pobreza, la desigualdad y las capacidades locales para una CG efectiva.
- Los geriatras requieren habilidades en colaboración interdisciplinaria, prescripción social y atención basada en derechos.
