Sus antecedentes:

  • El sistema del complemento es un componente inmune clave, pero su papel en la condición post-COVID-19 sigue sin estar claro.
  • Investigar la activación del complemento puede ofrecer información sobre la fisiopatología de los síntomas de COVID-19 a largo plazo.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Para investigar la hiperactividad del complemento de larga duración en los sobrevivientes de COVID-19 con y sin condición post-COVID-19.
  • Para determinar si la activación de la vía del complemento está asociada con la presencia de síntomas específicos post-COVID-19.

Principales métodos:

  • Un estudio de caso-control (diseño 2: 1) comparó a los sobrevivientes de COVID-19 con y sin la condición post-COVID-19.
  • Se analizaron las muestras de sangre para las proteínas clásicas de la vía del complemento (C3, C4, C5, C7) y la actividad del complemento hemolítico total (CH50).
  • La condición post-COVID-19 se definió por síntomas autoinformados que incluían fatiga, artralgia, mialgia, problemas de memoria, dolor de cabeza o palpitaciones.

Principales resultados:

  • No se encontraron diferencias significativas en los niveles generales de proteínas del complemento o en la actividad de CH50 entre los grupos.
  • Los pacientes con fatiga post-COVID mostraron niveles más bajos de C3 en comparación con aquellos sin fatiga.
  • Los sobrevivientes con disnea post-COVID mostraron niveles más bajos de proteínas C3, C5 y C7.

Conclusiones:

  • Este estudio no encontró evidencia de activación general de la vía del complemento clásico en sobrevivientes de COVID-19 con una condición post-COVID-19 hasta dos años después de la infección.
  • Las proteínas específicas del complemento se asociaron con síntomas específicos posteriores a COVID-19, lo que sugiere un papel matizado en la condición.
