Sus antecedentes:

  • La detección temprana de la demencia es crucial para la intervención. Las escalas de calificación visual (VRS) evalúan la atrofia cerebral en RM pero tienen limitaciones en las etapas tempranas de la enfermedad. La brecha de edad cerebral (BAG), derivada de RM analizada por IA, muestra potencial para detectar cambios cerebrales relacionados con la demencia.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Evaluar si la BAG puede predecir la progresión de la demencia en personas con deterioro cognitivo subjetivo (SCD) y deterioro cognitivo leve (MCI). Evaluar el valor predictivo adicional de la BAG en comparación con las VRS tradicionales.

Principales métodos:

  • Análisis de datos de RM de 757 individuos (391 SCD, 366 MCI) con seguimiento prospectivo. Se utilizó el software BrainageR para calcular la BAG a partir de escáneres de RM T1. Se emplearon modelos de regresión de Cox para evaluar el valor predictivo de la BAG y la VRS para la progresión de la demencia.

Principales resultados:

  • 224 participantes progresaron a demencia. La BAG predijo significativamente la progresión a demencia tanto en los grupos SCD como MCI. La BAG proporcionó un valor predictivo adicional sobre la VRS, particularmente en el grupo SCD donde la VRS no mostró poder predictivo significativo.

Conclusiones:

  • La BAG es un predictor valioso de la progresión de la demencia en personas con SCD y MCI. La BAG demuestra una capacidad predictiva superior a la VRS en las etapas tempranas del deterioro cognitivo (SCD). La BAG tiene un potencial significativo para mejorar la evaluación del riesgo de demencia temprana.
