Sus antecedentes:

  • Los eventos adversos en la vejez se asocian con un mayor riesgo de deterioro cognitivo y demencia.; Un fuerte apoyo social (redes, contactos) y la satisfacción con la vida pueden proteger contra los trastornos neurocognitivos en adultos mayores.; Examen transversal de las asociaciones de factores favorables y adversos con los resultados cognitivos en adultos mayores.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Examinar las asociaciones entre los factores adversos en la vejez (estrés, desventaja del vecindario, multimorbilidad) y los factores favorables (apoyo estructural, satisfacción con la vida) con los resultados cognitivos.; Investigar el papel del sexo y la raza/etnia como modificadores del efecto en estas asociaciones.

Principales métodos:

  • Estudio poblacional de 6.645 adultos mayores de 50 años del Estudio Longitudinal Brasileño sobre Envejecimiento (ELSI-Brazil).; Se utilizaron modelos de regresión lineal para evaluar la asociación de los factores con las puntuaciones cognitivas compuestas.; El análisis incluyó el examen del sexo y la raza/etnia como posibles modificadores del efecto.

Principales resultados:

  • El aumento del apoyo estructural (β=0.030) y la satisfacción con la vida (β=0.014) se asociaron de forma independiente con un mejor rendimiento cognitivo.; Se encontró una interacción significativa entre el apoyo estructural y la raza/etnia (β=0.021).; El efecto protector del apoyo estructural fue el doble en las personas de raza negra (β=0.039) en comparación con las personas blancas (β=0.019).

Conclusiones:

  • El apoyo estructural y la satisfacción con la vida impactan positivamente la salud cognitiva en adultos mayores, independientemente de las adversidades.; El apoyo estructural demuestra efectos protectores más fuertes para las personas de raza negra.; Las estrategias de salud pública deben centrarse en el apoyo comunitario y los factores de satisfacción con la vida para los adultos mayores.
