Sus antecedentes:

La diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2) es una creciente preocupación de salud mundial.
El deterioro cognitivo es un problema importante en las poblaciones que envejecen.
La relación entre la DM2 y la función cognitiva requiere una mayor investigación.

Objetivo del estudio:

Investigar el impacto de la diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2) en el deterioro cognitivo.
Comparar el riesgo de deterioro cognitivo en individuos con DM2 preexistente, DM2 de nueva aparición y sin DM2.

Principales métodos:

Un estudio de cohorte prospectivo basado en la comunidad que involucró a 1.350 participantes de 40 años o más en la zona rural de Xi'an.
Los participantes se dividieron en grupos sin DM2, con DM2 preexistente y con DM2 de nueva aparición.
La función cognitiva se evaluó utilizando el Mini-Examen del Estado Mental (MMSE) durante un período de seguimiento de 4 años.

Principales resultados:

Se observó deterioro cognitivo en el 17,0% de los participantes.
La incidencia de deterioro cognitivo fue significativamente mayor en el grupo con DM2 de nueva aparición (26,0%) en comparación con el grupo sin DM2 (15,7%).
La DM2 de nueva aparición se asoció con un riesgo significativamente mayor de deterioro cognitivo (OR=1,726, p=0,039).

Conclusiones:

La DM2 de nueva aparición eleva significativamente el riesgo de deterioro cognitivo durante 4 años en personas de 40 años o más.
Las etapas tempranas de la DM2 pueden representar un período crítico para el deterioro cognitivo.
Las intervenciones dirigidas al manejo temprano de la DM2 podrían ser cruciales para preservar la función cognitiva.
