Sus antecedentes:

  • La pérdida auditiva relacionada con la edad es un factor de riesgo conocido de demencia, pero su asociación específica con la enfermedad de Alzheimer y la patología de la beta-amiloide (Aβ) no está clara.
  • Los estudios en animales sugieren una relación bidireccional entre la pérdida auditiva y la Aβ, lo que requiere una investigación en humanos.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Investigar la asociación bidireccional entre la pérdida auditiva relacionada con la edad y la patología Aβ en una cohorte humana.
  • Aclarar si la pérdida auditiva predice la acumulación de Aβ o si la patología Aβ influye en el declive auditivo.

Principales métodos:

  • Estudio prospectivo poblacional de Rotterdam con 474 participantes.
  • Se midieron biomarcadores plasmáticos basales (Aβ42/40, pTau217) y el promedio de tono puro (PTA) para la pérdida auditiva.
  • Se realizaron exploraciones PET de amiloide después de ~7 años, con una segunda medición de PTA 2 años después.

Principales resultados:

  • El PTA basal y los cambios en el PTA no predijeron la positividad incidente para PET amiloide.
  • No se encontró una asociación significativa entre los biomarcadores plasmáticos basales y los cambios en el PTA a lo largo del tiempo.
  • El estudio no encontró evidencia de una relación bidireccional entre la pérdida auditiva y la patología Aβ.

Conclusiones:

  • Este estudio longitudinal no encontró asociación entre la pérdida auditiva relacionada con la edad y la patología Aβ en individuos que viven en la comunidad.
  • Los hallazgos sugieren que la pérdida auditiva puede aumentar el riesgo de demencia a través de vías independientes de la patología Aβ.
