  • La soledad es cada vez más reconocida como un factor importante relacionado con el deterioro cognitivo.
  • Este estudio investiga la soledad, el aislamiento social y el rendimiento cognitivo en Brasil.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Examinar la relación entre la soledad, el aislamiento social y el rendimiento cognitivo.
  • Explorar las variaciones demográficas, particularmente en la población brasileña.
  • Identificar factores de riesgo específicos para el deterioro cognitivo.

Principales métodos:

  • Se utilizaron datos de 5284 participantes (mayores de 50 años) del estudio ELSI-Brasil.
  • Se excluyeron los participantes con depresión; se calculó una puntuación compuesta global de cognición.
  • Se evaluó la soledad mediante una sola pregunta; se analizaron los datos utilizando el software R.

Principales resultados:

  • La soledad predijo puntuaciones cognitivas más bajas e independencia funcional en todas las edades.
  • La asociación entre la soledad y las puntuaciones cognitivas fue significativa en adultos mayores.
  • La soledad moderó las asociaciones entre edad-cognición y edad-independencia funcional, particularmente en hombres.

Conclusiones:

  • Los hombres son particularmente vulnerables a los efectos cognitivos de la soledad durante el envejecimiento.
  • Los hombres solitarios experimentan un impacto negativo más pronunciado del envejecimiento en la cognición.
  • La comprensión de los factores específicos de la población es vital para las políticas de prevención dirigidas a la salud cognitiva.
