Sus antecedentes:

  • La percepción facial es crucial para la interacción social y disminuye con la edad.
  • Los adultos mayores son vulnerables al aislamiento social y la demencia, lo que hace que la percepción facial sea crítica.
  • La disminución relacionada con la edad en la percepción facial ocurre independientemente de la disminución cognitiva general.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Investigar el papel de la acumulación de hierro relacionada con la edad en la disminución de la percepción facial.
  • Determinar si el aumento de hierro en regiones cerebrales específicas está relacionado con el deterioro del reconocimiento facial.

Principales métodos:

  • Se utilizaron resonancias magnéticas estructurales y funcionales (fMRI) para evaluar el hierro cerebral y la actividad en regiones de procesamiento facial (por ejemplo, FFA).
  • Se utilizó el mapeo cuantitativo de susceptibilidad para medir la concentración de hierro en 18 adultos mayores sanos.
  • Se evaluaron las pruebas conductuales (CFMT/CCMT) de reconocimiento facial y de automóviles, controlando la función cognitiva general.

Principales resultados:

  • Una mayor concentración de hierro en el área facial fusiforme derecha (FFA) se asoció significativamente con un peor rendimiento en el reconocimiento facial.
  • No se encontró una asociación significativa entre el hierro de la FFA y el reconocimiento de automóviles, ni entre el hierro en el área de lugares del hipocampo (PPA) y el reconocimiento facial.
  • Las medidas cognitivas generales (velocidad de procesamiento, memoria) no se correlacionaron con las puntuaciones de reconocimiento facial.

Conclusiones:

  • Los niveles elevados de hierro en las regiones de procesamiento facial están específicamente relacionados con la disminución de las habilidades de percepción facial en adultos mayores.
  • Estos hallazgos sugieren que el hierro cerebral, y no el declive cognitivo general, puede subyacer a los déficits de percepción facial relacionados con la edad.
  • Se necesita más investigación para explorar el impacto del hierro cerebral en la conectividad neuronal en las redes de percepción facial.
