Sus antecedentes:

  • Los vasos sanguíneos mineralizados (MBV) contribuyen a la rigidez vascular y son prevalentes en trastornos neurodegenerativos como la enfermedad de Alzheimer (EA).
  • Existe una investigación limitada sobre MBV en estudios post mortem, especialmente en poblaciones blancas no hispanas.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Investigar la prevalencia y distribución regional de MBV en los cerebros de personas hispanas y blancas no hispanas con EA confirmada patológicamente.
  • Abordar la brecha en la investigación neuropatológica sobre MBV en poblaciones diversas.

Principales métodos:

  • Se examinó tejido cerebral post mortem de personas fallecidas hispanas (n=92) y blancas no hispanas (n=184) con EA confirmada.
  • Se evaluó la presencia de MBV en el hipocampo posterior, el putamen y el globo pálido utilizando secciones teñidas con hematoxilina y eosina.

Principales resultados:

  • La prevalencia de MBV fue mayor en el globo pálido (59,0%), seguido del hipocampo posterior (28,6%) y el putamen (14,8%).
  • La carga de MBV difirió significativamente entre las regiones del cerebro (p < 0,001 para todas las comparaciones).
  • No se encontraron diferencias significativas en la presencia de MBV entre personas hispanas y blancas no hispanas con EA (p = 0,63).

Conclusiones:

  • Los MBV exhiben patrones específicos de la región en cerebros con enfermedad de Alzheimer.
  • Este estudio contribuye a la comprensión de los MBV como una neuropatología vascular poco estudiada en la EA.
  • Se necesita más investigación para dilucidar el papel de los MBV en la patogénesis de la EA.
